Yet I’m surprised by how difficult these sessions can be for my patients. Many become visibly uncomfortable upon hearing their voice played back to them. “Do I really sound like that?” they wonder, wincing. (Yes, you do.)

Some become so unsettled they refuse outright to listen to the recording — much less go over the subtle changes I want to highlight.

The discomfort we have overhearing our voices in audio recordings is probably due to a mix of physiology and psychology.

For one, the sound from an audio recording is transmitted differently to your brain than the sound generated when you speak.

When listening to a recording of your voice, the sound travels through the air and into your ears — what’s referred to as “air conduction.” The sound energy vibrates the ear drum and small ear bones. These bones then transmit the sound vibrations to the cochlea, which stimulates nerve axons that send the auditory signal to the brain.

However, when you speak, the sound from your voice reaches the inner ear in a different way. While some of the sound is transmitted through air conduction, much of the sound is internally conducted directly through your skull bones. When you hear your own voice when you speak, it’s due to a blend of both external and internal conduction, and internal bone conduction appears to boost the lower frequencies.

For this reason, people generally perceive their voice as deeper and richer when they speak. The recorded voice, in comparison, can sound thinner and higher pitched, which many find cringeworthy.

There’s a second reason hearing a recording of your voice can be so disconcerting. It really is a new voice — one that exposes a difference between your self-perception and reality. Because your voice is unique and an important component of self-identity, this mismatch can be jarring. Suddenly you realize other people have been hearing something else all along.

Even though we may actually sound more like our recorded voice to others, I think the reason so many of us squirm upon hearing it is not that the recorded voice is necessarily worse than our perceived voice. Instead, we’re simply more used to hearing ourselves sound a certain way.

A 2005 study had patients with voice problems rate their own voices when presented with recordings of them. They also had clinicians rate the voices. The researchers found that patients, across the board, tended to more negatively rate the quality of their recorded voice compared with the objective assessments of clinicians.

So if the voice in your head castigates the voice coming out of a recording device, it’s probably your inner critic overreacting — and you’re judging yourself a bit too harshly.

Juan Manuel Ballestero, 47, was living in Spain but visiting a tiny island off mainland Portugal last March when international flights were grounded due to COVID-19. The veteran sailor says he refused to face “the end of the world” apart from his parents back in Argentina, so he packed up his 8.8-metre-long sailboat, the Skua, and set sail for home.

Ballestero ultimately travelled for 85 days and across roughly 9,000 kilometres on a voyage that would take him past the equator, through several storms and across the Atlantic Ocean alone — all so he could see his parents and brothers again.

“I didn’t want to stay like a coward on an island where there were no cases,” Ballestero told the New York Times. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”

Ballestero prepared his Ohlson 29 sailboat by loading it up with canned tuna, rice, water, booze and simple rations, then he set out from Porto Santo, a tiny island in the ocean southwest of Portugal, on March 24.

Ballestero’s family say they were confident he could make the journey because he’d spent his entire career at sea, as both a fisherman and a skipper aboard various research vessels in different parts of the world. However, they didn’t always know where he was or if he was safe.

“The uncertainty of not knowing where he was for 50-some days very rough,” his father, Carlos Alberto Ballestero, told the Times. “But we had no doubt this was going to turn out well.”

The homesick sailor first travelled south from Porto Santo to Cape Verde, a Portuguese-speaking nation of islands, where he hoped to restock for his journey in mid-April. However, locals turned him away due to fears of the coronavirus, and he was forced to tighten his belt as he struck out into the open Atlantic en route to Argentina.

Ballestero says he’s spent many days on the open ocean in the past, but the solo trip was hard on him. He drank. He prayed. He panicked when he thought a distant boat was following him, only to realize later that it wasn’t.

He also marvelled at the wildlife around him, watching schools of fish pass the boat, and groups of dolphins swim alongside him for thousands of miles at a time. Ballestero later shared footage from the dolphins’ visit on Instagram.

He says he only once tried to catch a fish, but he gave up because he didn’t want to turn on the animals that had kept him company for so long.

“It felt like killing a person,” he said.

“I learned a lot about myself,” he added. “The voyage gave me lots of humility.”

Ballestero says he would tune in to the radio for 30 minutes each night to listen to updates about the virus, even though he was quarantined from the danger by thousands of kilometres of ocean in every direction.

“I was locked up in my own freedom,” he said.

He said one of the most memorable moments aboard the vessel was when he saw a skua — a seabird for which he’d named the boat — fly by during the journey.

“It was as if the bird was telling me not to give up, to keep going,” he said.

He’d initially expected the voyage to take 75 days, but a particularly rough storm hit the boat off the coast of Brazil and left it too damaged to sail onward.

“The boat went over,” he told the Associated Press. “I couldn’t trim the sail in time.”

Ballestero brought the boat into Vitoria, Brazil, for repairs, and made contact with his family before venturing out on the last leg of his journey home. He learned at that point this his brother had been telling everyone about his trip, and that reporters would be waiting for him in Argentina when he arrived.

The delay also prevented him from making it back home in time for his father’s 90th birthday, but he was determined to at least make it in time for Father’s Day.

The wayward seaman arrived in Mar del Plata, Argentina, to a hero’s welcome on Wednesday, June 17, only to wait three more days for a coronavirus test before he would be allowed on shore. He shared several photos and videos from the journey on Instagram during the last leg of the voyage, and while he was waiting for his test results.

He spoke to The Associated Press from the boat while he waited, describing how good it felt to finally be back in Argentina.

“I came to my home. It is human,” he said. “Now I am calm, anchored here in the middle of this port … There is no storm to bother me, or boat to run me over.”

Ballestero was ultimately allowed to set foot on Argentinian soil that weekend, and he made it home just in time to spend Father’s Day with his dad, Carlos, and his mother Nilda, 82.

“I wanted to be with them,” he told the AP.

He spoke to The Associated Press from the boat while he waited, describing how good it felt to finally be back in Argentina.

Generations of Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the nation’s armed forces, emerging as heroes on the battlefield.

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to their bravery and commitment to protecting America and its interests around the world.

Here are six members of the U.S. armed forces who have died in combat, giving their lives fighting for freedom:

Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.

Joseph Kennedy Jr., the older brother of the late American President John F. Kennedy, died on Aug. 12, 1944, after a bombing campaign during World War II went wrong.

“His mission was to fly over Normandy, France in a radio-controlled B-17 bomber to a German V-2 rocket launching site, arm the explosives stowed on board, and then parachute to safety before the plane exploded over the German target,” says the National Park Service, which oversees the family’s former home in Massachusetts.

However, the explosives ignited before the Navy lieutenant and his counterpart could eject, killing them instantly. The cause of the explosions has never been determined.

He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal and Navy Cross.

Milton Olive III

Army Pfc. Milton Olive III became the first African American recipient of the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War after falling on a grenade to save his fellow infantrymen.

The incident happened while he was patrolling in Phu Cuong in 1965 – and less than a year later, Olive’s father and stepmother were presented his posthumous medal in a ceremony at the White House, the Department of Veterans Affairs says.

After a member of the Viet Cong hurled a grenade toward his platoon, Olive ran forward and yelled “I’ve got it!” and tucked the grenade into his waist before bearing the full brunt of the explosion, according to Military.com.

“It was the most incredible display of selfless bravery I ever witnessed,” his platoon commander reportedly said later.

Gary Gordon & Randall Shughart

Army Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroics during the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in October 1993.

During the conflict, when the pair learned that ground forces were not immediately available to secure a Black Hawk helicopter crash site, they “unhesitatingly volunteered to be inserted to protect the four critically wounded personnel, despite being well aware of the growing number of enemy personnel closing in on the site,” the Army says.

Gordon and Shughart braved intense small arms fire while making their way to the wreckage and killed an undetermined number of enemy attackers before running out of ammunition. They both were fatally wounded themselves after protecting the downed crew and their actions saved a pilot’s life, the Army says.

Both men later were portrayed in the 2001 war film “Black Hawk Down.”

Lori Piestewa

Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa became the first American Indian woman to die in combat on foreign soil and the first American woman to die in the Iraq War after her support unit was ambushed near Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003, the Army says.

“Her Humvee weaved to evade gunfire when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the left-front wheel, causing the vehicle to crash. She and a handful of personnel survived, but they were all taken prisoner,” according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. “Piestewa specifically was sent to a hospital in Nasiriyah.”

“On April 1, 2003, U.S. Special Forces attempted to rescue the POWs,” it added. “When they didn’t recover her, she was declared MIA. Later, Special Forces discovered a mass shallow grave behind the hospital. A body there was positively identified as Lori Piestewa.”

Piestewa was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medal.

Robert J. Miller

Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller was credited with saving the lives of seven U.S. soldiers and 15 Afghanistan National Army troops who were ambushed by insurgents in Konar Province in 2008.

The Army says following an assault on enemy positions, Miller led a small squad to conduct a battle damage assessment – but the group suddenly found themselves under attack.

“As point man, Staff Sergeant Miller was at the front of the patrol, cut off from supporting elements, and less than 20 meters from enemy forces,” it said. “Nonetheless, with total disregard for his own safety, he called for his men to quickly move back to covered positions as he charged the enemy over exposed ground and under overwhelming enemy fire in order to provide protective fire for his team.”

The 24-year-old was shot in the upper torso during his advance but continued to push forward, drawing fire from more than 100 insurgents upon himself, the Army says.

“After killing at least 10 insurgents, wounding dozens more, and repeatedly exposing himself to withering enemy fire while moving from position to position, Staff Sergeant Miller was mortally wounded by enemy fire,” read Miller’s citation for the Medal of Honor, which he received posthumously.

Major packaging producers and environmental charities have called for the G7 summit to agree to a global treaty on plastic to tackle the waste crisis.

Nestlé, one of the largest creators of plastic waste, has joined the supermarkets Aldi, Iceland and the Co-op as signatories in an open letter that supports a binding worldwide treaty to tackle plastic pollution.

The letter, also supported by the TV presenter Chris Packham and activist groups Surfers Against Sewage and A Plastic Planet, says that only a global approach will start to tackle the problem.

“Some 300m tonnes of plastic waste [are] produced every year,” the letter said. “Less than 10% of all plastic has ever been recycled. The rest piles up in landfill, is incinerated, or ends up littering our natural environment for centuries.”

The coronavirus pandemic has contributed to the plastic waste crisis in the form of mountains of discarded PPE. “The pandemic has only sent us deeper into this crisis. In just two months, 1bn items of PPE were handed out in the UK alone. Globally, 3m face masks are thrown away every minute – amounting to 129bn every month – mostly disposable, mostly plastic,” the signatories said.

G7 leaders are meeting in Cornwall in June. Environment ministers of the G7 countries have issued a statement saying they are committed to protecting the land and the ocean and to slow biodiversity loss by 2030. But the signatories to the open letter published on Thursday say there needs to be a focus on plastic. “With the G7 summit meeting in June, now is the time to put a global treaty on plastics on the agenda.

“More than 70 governments – including the UK – have already expressed their support for such a treaty. And with the members of the G7 credited with leading the way to secure the Paris climate agreement, they are primed to champion a similar treaty tackling the scourge of plastic pollution.”

As well as causing ocean pollution, the world’s reliance on single-use plastic is contributing to the climate crisis and threatens attempts to meet the Paris climate targets.

Analysis published this month revealed 20 companies were responsible for more than half of the world’s plastic waste.

More than two-thirds of UN member states have indicated they are willing to sign a treaty to tackle plastic waste.

By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried there.

Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor the dead on separate days until after World War I.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date General Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Memorial Day Traditions

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.

Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Some people wear a red poppy in remembrance of those fallen in war—a tradition that began with a World War I poem. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because Memorial Day weekend—the long weekend comprising the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself—unofficially marks the beginning of summer.
